Arise, O Lord, and Sit at God’s Right Hand

An Ascension Hymn

Tune: Jerusalem, du hochgebaute Stadt (TLH 619)

1 Arise, O Lord, and sit at God’s right hand,

Your foes beneath Your feet!

Let reason try, and fail to understand

How You our sins defeat!

You fill all things in heaven,

Yet stay with us on earth

To speak our sins forgiven

And give us second birth.

2 What joy is this, that You captivity

Have captured by Your pow’r?

That bondage which our sins have made us see

Is gone and is no more!

And now to every nation

You send the Comforter

To bring to us salvation

And on us pardon pour.

3 You shatter kingdoms with Your Kingdom’s rule,

And all dominions fall,

The wise on earth You make into a fool,

But to the foolish call,

“To Me come, all who sorrow

For sins so burdensome;

In Me is your tomorrow,

In Me Your rest has come.”

4 Shout to the One who rides upon the cloud,

Sing praises to our King!

He tears apart death’s dark and doleful shroud,

And gives us joy to sing,

“O Holy, Holy, Holy

Of Sabaoth Lord God!

You fill all heav’n with glory

And all the earth with good.”

5 So let us kneel here in the holiest place,

Where God’s right hand comes down

To give to sinners with His means of grace

Faith, heaven’s joy to own

So that we will not perish -

With joy we eat this food,

Your body that we cherish

And Your life-giving blood.

6 Oh, let our souls leave all our sins behind,

And walk in love and fear,

That we with hearts no longer hard and blind,

Our Savior may revere,

And trust His grace abounding

More than sin can increase,

With lives and voices sounding

Christ’s song of joy and peace.

7 Now hear us when we cry to You, O King!

Your face, Lord, do we seek!

So strength and pow’r Your Word will always bring

To all the poor and meek,

Who find You now abiding

With those who here repent,

In faithful hearts residing

Through Word and Sacrament.

8 Soon as You came, Christ, You will come again,

And raise us from the dead,

And we will stand before You, free from stain,

Washed in the blood You shed!

Until that day, Christ, lead us

To claim in You God’s grace;

And with Your Spirit feed us

Until we see Your face.
