Come, Sinner, Here to Ponder

Tune: Wie sol ich dich empfangen / O Lord, How Shall I Meet Thee

1 Come, sinner, here to ponder

What God has done for thee;

The Lord of Sinai’s thunder

Is hanged upon a tree;

The curse and death of Adam

And all His children too

He bears with all sin’s burden,

To make creation new.

2 I come, my sin confessing,

And not denying it,

And see my Lord possessing

What damns me to the pit.

O Jesus, Jesus, hear me,

Though I have caused Thy pain,

Yet draw me closer near Thee,

That I Thy love may gain!

3 I see Thy friends all leaving

Thee, willing to be bound;

I see Thee, shame receiving,

In whom no sin is found;

The source of life is dying

For me who made Him die;

And I am kneeling, crying

For grace His wounds supply.

4 All holiness is covered

With all my sin and guilt;

All punishment is suffered

For pleasures I have felt;

And what is all my sorrow,

Who cannot pay for sin?

Yet from His pain I borrow

The peace I need within.

5 Let now Thy sufferings hide me

From wrath I truly earn;

My sins were all inside Thee,

And so for Thee I yearn.

Dear Lord and Brother, take me

As one Thou hast redeemed,

Wash every stain and make me

Before God unashamed.

6 Dear Jesus, I denied Thee,

Let me deny me now;

Though oft I have defied Thee,

Yet Thou wilt mercy show;

For why didst Thou so suffer

Beneath the wrath of God,

Except that Thou could’st offer

Peace through Thy precious blood?

7 Then place upon me crosses

That I may always see

In midst of pain and losses

Thy love upon the tree,

And cast away vain pleasures,

And name Thee as mine own,

And give up all earth’s treasures

To claim by faith Thy crown.

8 So I will praise Thee ever,

With strength Thy grace doth give,

And own Thee as my Savior,

Who maketh sinners live,

And only trust Thy mercy,

And glory in Thy grace,

And drink Thy blood when thirsty

Until I see Thy face.
