From the Dust of Earth He Made Him

A Hymn for the Second Sunday of Epiphany

87 87 87 Alleluias

Tune: Divinum Mysterium (Of the Father’s Love Begotten)

1. From the dust of earth He made him,

Breathed in him the Breath of life,

And from man's own rib God fashioned

Woman, and gave man his wife.

"It is very good," He preaches,

Still to us in sin's sad strife.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

2. What our Maker joins together,

Let not man try separate;

He who made them one is making

Life He can alone create.

Come, God’s creatures, let us marvel!

None His might can estimate.

Alleluia!  Alleluia!

3. We have seen His wrath outpouring

On the flesh who would despise

What our Maker has created,

Choosing what would please their eyes;

Christians, let us not be counted

With the world that surely dies.

Lord, have mercy! Lord, have mercy!

4. At a wedding, as in Eden,

God in flesh His glory shows,

And His love for man and woman

In the wine from water flows,

Giving to His lost creation

Joy from sorrow Jesus knows.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

5. As from rib God made the woman,

While her husband slept alone,

So through ribs of Jesus sleeping,

From his flesh and from His bone,

Water, blood, and Spirit flowing,

Make the Bride Christ claims His own.

Alleluia!  Alleluia!

6. Here is quenched our Maker’s anger

By our Maker’s love for us;

Here is found His free forgiveness –

“You are good,” we hear Him bless;

Clothed in Him our shame is covered –

Pure we stand in purest dress!

Alleluia!  Alleluia!

7. To the sorrowed and the suffering,

Living still in Eden’s pain,

Give, dear Jesus, faith and patience

By Your Word, which will remain

When the Church You joined together

Will her Bridegroom’s joy obtain.

Alleluia!  Alleluia!

8. Grant, we pray You, dearest Father,

Through our Lord, Your only Son,

By the comfort of Your Spirit,

To adore You, Three in One,

And to join the wedding banquet

When our earthly race is run.

Alleluia! Alleluia!
