Lord God, Our Heavenly Father
A Reminiscere Hymn
7676 776
Tune: Herr Christ, der einig Gott’s Sohn (LSB 402)
1 Lord God, our heavenly Father,
Come answer when we pray!
We cannot trust another
Upon this narrow way.
We ask in all temptation
That You would send salvation
To us Your children dear.
2. So often You have shown us
You hear our every sigh,
And quickly come to own us
When once with faith we cry,
“O Lord, if You are willing!”
You come, our conscience stilling
With mercy swift and sweet.
3. And sometimes You will hear us
Before we say a word,
And out of danger steer us
Before our voice is heard.
For this we give our praises,
For Your free grace which raises
Our souls from death to life.
4. But sometimes You would teach us
To pray and wait in faith;
We feel You cannot reach us,
And that we waste our breath,
As if You could be sleeping,
While we must suffer, keeping
Our lonely watch at night.
5. Then like the mother crying
For mercy from her Lord,
Be to our hearts supplying
The faith to keep Your Word;
If You must make us humble,
Let not our courage crumble –
Let us pray all the more!
6. As Jacob by the Jordan
Fought Jesus without shame,
And bore His Savior’s burden
Till he received His name,
In such faith let us hold You,
And in our hearts enfold You,
And be Your Israel.
7 By night, dear Lord, I sought You;
Your face You did not show
Till at Your time I caught You,
And will not let You go.
You let my faith be shaken,
So that You could awaken
More love for only You.
8 So let us find Your blessing
If we feel we are cursed,
By faith Your pledge possessing,
That You will quench our thirst,
And drive out every devil,
And save us from all evil,
And answer every prayer.
