Lord Jesus Christ, My Truest Friend

Tune: Herr, wie du wilt (LSB 625)

1 Lord Jesus Christ, my truest Friend,

When earthly help can’t aid me;

On Your sweet words let me depend

To comfort and persuade me,

That, though I see my sin and guilt,

Yet, through the blood Your love has spilt,

You see me pure and spotless.

2 Give me what nature cannot give,

Faith, on Your Word relying;

In hope and love, Lord, let me live,

Your life my life supplying,

So that I always cling to you,

And find Your every promise true,

“Yes” and “Amen” forever.

3 Drive from me pride and unbelief,

Save me from sinful vices;

And if I doubt You, give relief

From Satan’s shrewd devices,

That I may stand when trials come

Until You come to take me home

Away from sin and evil.

4 Let me rejoice in You alone,

Confident of Your mercy;

Move me to pray before Your throne

For grace when I am thirsty;

Conform me to Your image pure,

That I may willingly endure

Each cross Your love will send me.

5 Dear Lord, to whom else can I go?

You only have redeemed me;

You have the only truth to show,

You with Your voice have claimed me;

So now I claim You as my Friend

And, when the tears and suffering end,

I see Your face in glory.
