Lord Jesus, You Alone Are Lord

Tune: In dich hab’ ich gehoffet (TLH 524)

1.         Lord Jesus, You alone are Lord;

So speaks Your Scriptures’ holy Word

From God the Holy Spirit,

Who takes what’s Yours,

And on me pours

The life I will inherit.

2.         The Father sent You from above

To show to sinners all His love

In You, the Son of Mary,

That we may know

The way to go

Beneath the cross we carry.

3.         For as the snake was lifted up,

So You for us drank down the cup

Of all the cross’s suffering,

So that our sin

Was borne within

The body You were offering.

4.         So in Your flesh I find my God,

And when I feel Your chast’ning rod,

I will not be despairing,

Since pain I feel

Must soon reveal

Your life that I am sharing.

5.         Baptized into Your death, O Christ,

I have the life You sacrificed,

Its innocence and glory;

Where I have died

There is supplied

Your resurrection’s story.

6.         O fix my heart on things above,

Where never ends the Father’s love,

You at His right hand pleading,

And here with us

With freest grace

Poor sinners still are feeding.

7.         I cannot cease to cry to You,

For faith and for the will to do

What is Your will and pleasure;

So make me meek,

That I may seek

You as my only Treasure.

8.         How long, O Lord, on this poor earth

Must I behold my second birth

By sin and fear surrounded?

Christ, quickly come,

And take me home

When soon the End is sounded.

9.         And may I faithful be that day,

Not caught in cares or gone astray,

Nor ruled by sin and devil,

But safe and free

Where You give me

Deliverance from all evil.

10.       Then shall my hunger have an end,

And You, on whom I now depend,

I’ll see with eyes made holy,

And gone will be

All misery

When I shall know You fully.
