O Jerusalem, the City
A hymn for Trinity 10
8787 7788
Tune: Freu Dich Sehr (LSB 347)
1 O Jerusalem, the city,
You who stone the ones God sends,
Hear Your God now full of pity,
Him on whom your rest depends,
When He sees your walls so proud,
Weeping, Jesus cries aloud,
“Your own unbelief has covered
All the peace I freely offered.”
2 Now’s the day of our salvation,
Now the Gospel’s peace is heard;
By His grace God calls creation
To believe His holy Word;
Woe to those who in their pride
Cast this precious gift aside!
Those who trust in their own merit
Will the curse of hell inherit.
3 God displays His mighty power
In His mercy and His love;
But there comes for earth an hour
When His wrath from heav’n above
Shall against all unbelief
Turn all laughter into grief;
Every dark abomination
Shall receive its condemnation.
4 Jesus, You who come to gather,
As a hen beneath her wing,
All poor sinners to the Father,
To Your guilty creature bring
True repentance for my guilt,
Faith that claims the blood You spilt,
Hope for grace You’ll be revealing
When the trumpet’s blast is pealing.
5 Let me not by willful sinning
Claim the judgment I have won,
But let faith find its beginning
And its end in You alone;
Nothing claim I but Your voice
That declares to me Your choice
To redeem me from damnation,
To bestow Your free salvation.
