O Lord, I Wait With Yearning

A Hymn for the End of the Church Year

76 76 876

Tune: Herr Christ, der einig Gott’s Sohn (ELH 276)

1 O Lord, I wait with yearning

For You to come again,

When sighing will be turning

Into the end of pain,

When Your great majesty appears

To change my lowly body

No more to shed its tears.

2 I wait with lamp still burning,

My faith alone in You,

And from Your Word am learning

Your will and what to do,

While here I wait beneath the cross

That You in love place on me

To purge away my dross.

3 Lord, cast my each transgression

Into the Sea of Red,

To claim as my possession

The life for which You bled,

And follow here Your Spirit’s word

That soon my eyes may fasten

Upon Your love’s reward.

4 Fill all my heart and doing

With love for everyone,

Your holy will pursuing

Until Your will is done,

When I, kept in Your Word and faith,

Will see Your grace’s purpose

When I shall conquer death.

5 O Light of Light, still beaming

Deep in my mortal heart,

Come soon, my flesh redeeming,

When better life will start,

And at the wedding feast above

I join with saints and angels

To sing and praise Your love.
