There Is Joy I Know in Heaven

Tune: Werde munter (LSB 548)

1 There is joy I know in heaven

Over sinners who repent;

For our God speaks sin forgiven

When the Law will not relent;

Yes, our burden Jesus bore

Till our sins were all no more,

Since in Christ they all were punished

Till God’s wrath had wholly vanished.

2 Of the guilt my conscience suffers

Jesus knows it all too well,

And today to me He offers

What can silence death and hell.

To the conscience crying out

From amidst my sin and doubt

Comes the comfort of the Spirit

Cleansing me in Jesus’ merit.

3 For the sheep that has gone straying

In the desert Jesus seeks;

On his neck the lamb then laying,

To the frightened sinner speaks,

“Now the wolf can no more harm,

Now the world has no more charm;

Now the sins that once did bind you

Lie all powerless behind you.”

4 “All the good you now are lacking

In Your God and Brother see;

All your sins that are attacking

Have all done their worst to Me,

When I gave my righteousness

And was given Your distress –

Every cause of your abduction

Was all brought to sheer destruction.”

5 What can I, poor sinner, pay You

In my thanks for all Your love?

Though I truly did betray You,

Yet from me You did not move,

But still found me in my grief,

Bound my wounds and gave relief,

And are still release supplying

From my constant fear of dying.

6 For the love that You have shown me,

Give me love for everyone;

For the grace by which You own me,

Let my foes by grace be won;

For the patience shown to me

Let Your child now patient be

To endure each cross and trial

During this short earthly while.

7 Lord, I pray from sin’s pollution

Keep my conscience always clean,

That I live by absolution

Of the sinner I have been;

That I daily grow in grace

Till I see Your precious face

When the trumpet sounds in heaven

And the crown to me is given.
